Waste management has not always been the well-regulated operation that it is today. In fact, up until the 18th century, people tried to recycle as much of what they used as possible, in an effort to make the most of their limited resources.
However, this system became less practical as time went on. In England, industrialization had led to the need for new methods of disposal to be created. From the early-1700s, the increasing levels of filth in the streets of England was causing problems for the population, with disease rampant due to the fact that waste and water were rarely kept separate.
From the 1750s onwards, a number of prominent people called for a central organization that would be tasked with ensuring that the streets stayed clean. These early calls for better conditions were backed up by increasingly damaging epidemics. Cholera, in particular, was known to ravage densely populated areas, with its spread being directly related to the amount of waste that was kept near the water supplies.
This led to the introduction of the Nuisance Removal and Disease Prevention Act of 1846, which laid the foundations for waste management in London. This evolved into the Public Health Act 1875, which made it mandatory for all households to deposit their waste in a receptacle every week, for collection by a central entity.
It was here that early waste management was born, with the United States and many countries in Europe quickly adopting similar practices. In the years since, the industry has evolved a number of times to ensure the service continues to meet the needs of the population.
